Graduation Requirements

Selecting courses in high school is a key part of shaping your future. This Program of Studies is designed to guide students and families through state graduation requirements while highlighting the many elective opportunities available. Intentional course choices allow students to explore interests and prepare for a variety of postsecondary paths, including college enrollment, workforce entry, military service, or entrepreneurship.

As you build your schedule, we encourage a thoughtful approach that values both challenge and balance. High school is not solely about academic achievement; it it also a time to develop interests, support well-being, and maintain a healthy balance between school and life. Avoiding the "success trap" means choosing a schedule that stretches you while still allowing time for rest, relationships, and personal growth.

This guide provides an overview of the comprehensive curriculum offered at Upper Arlington High School. Required courses follow a structured progression and are recommended by teachers, allowing students to focus their attention on selecting electives that align with their interests and goals. Families will have the opportunity to review course requests, and students will meet with a school counselor to confirm and finalize their schedules.

Our goal is to support students in making informed course decisions while fostering both academic success and personal well-being. We are committed to helping every student create a high school experience that prepares them for whatever path lies ahead.

Students are encouraged to carefully plan a program of studies that will assist them in reaching their educational and future occupational goals. Course descriptions are designed to guide students in selecting the subjects that will lead them toward achieving these goals.

It is important that you select courses to ensure college and career readiness. We suggest that you:

  • review all requirements for graduation;
  • read the information given about each department;
  • study the sequence charts which suggest course patterns that lead to specific education and/or career goals;
  • talk to your current teachers; and
  • talk to your school counselor about developing a 4-year academic plan.

Upper Arlington High School will make every effort to maintain current records and to keep students and parents informed about the status of progress toward completing the necessary coursework for graduation requirements. It is each student’s and parent’s responsibility to be acquainted with the necessary requirements to meet this goal. School counselors are always available to meet and assist your family with this endeavor.
