Your Voice Matters: Master Plan Design Phase
The Upper Arlington community came together during a two-and-a-half-year facilities master planning process to craft a long-term, financially sensible master plan for the district’s aging schools. After the community-driven master planning process, Upper Arlington voters approved rebuilding the high school and renovating or rebuilding all five elementary schools.
While volunteer building teams created conceptual site plans for the buildings during the master planning process, the projects aren’t designed yet. The Board of Education is launching a design phase for all of the new or renovated school buildings. The theme throughout the master planning process was "your voice matters," and this will remain true during the design phase. Several teams of community members, staff members and students will be coming together during the design phase to inform the process of developing site and building plans for a new high school and five new or renovated elementary schools. Any community members and staff members may sign up on our website to participate in one or more Community Building Design Teams or the Districtwide Green Team.

Districtwide Green Team Meeting #2
This team of community members, staff members and students interested in exploring sustainability ideas for the new or renovated buildings will hold its second meeting on Tuesday, March 20 at 7 p.m. at Upper Arlington High School, 1650 Ridgeview Road.
The design phase will involve these four phases spanning December 2017 through February 2019.
December 2017-February 2018
The district will reach out to residents, staff members and students to join Community Building Design Teams as well as a Districtwide Green Team. Residents living within 200 feet of a new or renovated school building will also receive an invitation from the district to join Neighbor Committees for each school that will meet during the design and construction process. Space needs for school programming (i.e. classrooms, common spaces and specialized spaces such as athletics or arts) will be further defined and confirmed. Community and staff volunteers will work with design professionals from Perkins + Will and Moody Nolan to revisit the conceptual site plans created during the master planning process.
Schematic Design (SD)
March - May 2018
Community and staff volunteers will work with the design professionals to inform the process of developing and refining site and building plans. Renderings for each of the six buildings, including interior floor plans and exterior elevations, will be produced and presented to the community for feedback. Initial construction materials will be discussed. To ensure the projects stay on budget on schedule, two independent construction estimates will be produced.
Design Development (DD)
June - August 2018
Community and staff volunteers will inform the design professionals on the further development of the site and building plans. User Groups of staff members with similar jobs (i.e. high school science teachers or maintenance/custodial employees) will meet and provide additional feedback on the space(s) they use. Construction materials will be finalized. To ensure the projects stay on budget and on schedule, two independent construction estimates will be produced.
Contract Documents (CD)
September 2018 - February 2019
Final drawings and renderings will be prepared so that each construction project can be presented to bidders. Communication with the volunteer teams as well as the entire community will continue as the start of construction approaches.

Community Building Design Teams
Any and all community members and staff members may participate in these large-group design teams at any point during the design process. These teams will meet during each stage of the process to provide feedback to the Building Steering Committees.
Districtwide Green Team
This districtwide team will be made up of community members and staff members interested in studying sustainability opportunities for the new or renovated buildings.
Residents living within 200 feet of the new or renovated school buildings will receive an invitation from the district to participate in Neighbor Committees that will meet with and provide feedback to district leadership during the design and construction process. The district will contact these residents directly.
Building Steering Committees
These teams of community stakeholders and staff members, which have already been assembled, will work with the design professionals to inform the development of site and building plans and ensure that all feedback from staff members and the community is reflected in the designs. These teams will also work with the design professionals to ensure the projects stay on budget and on schedule.
These teams of staff members working in similar roles (i.e. high school science teachers or maintenance/custodial staff) will meet during the Design Development (DD) phase to provide feedback on the design of space(s) related to their roles as well as the overall design of the school building.
As of December 2017, construction on the athletic fields behind Tremont Elementary, the high school site and the five elementary schools is expected to follow this tentative timeline. This timeline may be revised during the design phase based on the development of site and building plans and/or during the construction process based on any potential delays that arise.
Spring 2018: Work will begin to construct a turf field, baseball and softball diamonds, and a support structure on the district-owned land behind Tremont Elementary School adjacent to Northam Park. This will serve as a transitional athletic space during construction at the high school and the permanent home of junior varsity baseball and softball as well as some field sports after construction.
Fall 2018: The turf field on the district-owned land behind Tremont Elementary School adjacent to Northam Park will be completed.
December 2018: Work will begin on a new Marv Moorehead Stadium situated to the south of the current stadium on the high school site. The turf field of the current stadium will remain open for use by high school teams as well as the community during construction. A portion of the track will be removed during this period, and one spring track season will be impacted.
March 2019: Work will begin on a new high school, renovated Barrington and Tremont elementary schools, and new Greensview (except the 1999 and 2007 additions) and Wickliffe Progressive elementary schools. While all four schools will remain open during construction, classroom trailers will likely be needed during the renovations at Barrington and Tremont.
Spring 2019: The baseball and softball diamonds on the district-owned land behind Tremont Elementary School adjacent to Northam Park are anticipated to open.
August 2019: The new Marv Moorehead Stadium and supporting athletic facilities will be completed.
Summer 2020: The old Windermere Elementary School will be demolished, and work will begin on a new Windermere Elementary School on the footprint of the old school.
Fall 2020: The new Greensview and Wickliffe Progressive elementary schools and the renovated Barrington and Tremont elementary schools will open to students. As construction continues on a new Windermere, students from that school will be educated for the 2020-2021 school year in the old Wickliffe building.
Fall 2021: The new Windermere and high school will open to students.
Fall 2022: The new high school site will be completed, with the old building demolished and the space on the south end of the site developed into athletic field space.
